Bedroom Makeover!

This bedroom has been one of our main projects over the past month or so. It has undergone a major transformation! We had a lot of fun with this. We're almost done.Check out our progress and the series of events it took to get our room ready.
***
After we tore the down the closet, all the wall paper, and layers of fake flooring out, we were left with raw wood walls and floors (with a LOT of little nails in them!).

One of the first thing we had to do was take out the thousands of little nails that once held the wall paper in place. It took about 10 solid days of de-nailing to finish this step!!!

Once the nails were out, we began caulking every gap in between the boards and around the edges of the room. (Thanks for the help Theo! We love you!)
Along with the caulking we began to put wood putty over all the nail holes and little (and not so little) imperfections in the wood. Mom, Peter, and Theo were awesome helpers!
Leanna focused on her wood putty work :)

Then we began sanding the walls down...

Notice how many nail holes were filled! (That's how many nails we took out or drove in!)

Honey sweetened ice tea... fuel for a work day :)
Woo hoo! De-nailing, caulk, wood putty, and sanding finished! Here we are- happy, hot, and exhausted!

Now it was time to prime.
Cynthia came out to help!
Jed painted a message :) I love you too Jeddy!
Once the primer was on the painting began. This was really fun... the room was finally coming to life!

The room is now finally painted! Pictures don't do it justice, but it is so beautiful in here now. We went with 3 shades of green for the ceiling, walls, and trim and brown paint on the window pains.

A job well done... I'll post more pictures once our room is all set up too. Thanks for looking!

Getting things done!

This was a productive week for us! Not only did Jed, Paul, & the team finish the roof, but Leanna's dad (Wil) and step mom (Joanna) came out and wired up our entire house!!! The electrical looks great! Thank you SO MUCH!!! Meanwhile, Leanna fixed and cleaned up old broken windows and began the tedious task of pulling nails out of the walls of our future bedroom (more on that later).

We worked hard and the heat and humidity were intense, but at the end of each day we found ways to unwind - enjoying cold brews, home cooked goods, and feasting on Mama Kerrie's world famous apple pies. THANK YOU EVERYONE for all your help!!!! Love you guys!!!
Here are some pictures... enjoy :)

Leanna went out and bought replacement glass for all of the broken panes (there were about 12 that were completely broken) and installed them into our windows.

We're going to use the original windows for a while. We like the weight pully system and the old wood frames.

We fixed the calk around each of the window panes... it went from being old and crusty...

to brilliant white and new

Our front door is pretty awesome... we were surprised at how beautiful the glass was once we cleaned it up!!

Chillin and drinkin smoothies... This was a satisfying week of work!

Clean Up Party!

This place was a MESS when we got it! I'm talking about layers of old, nasty, dusty wall paper nailed into the walls... piles of junk from the late 1800's - the 50's all over the floors... lots of random trash...

Anyways, the whole family came out to help us clean up. After a hard days work, things began to look a little better! These aren't the best pictures and they don't capture the full essence of the day, all our amazing helpers, and the drastic difference we all made in the place, but they will give you an idea.

Here are some before pictures:

future living room...

future kitchen...

Here's a picture of Clayton cleaning (notice he has to wear a mask! We all wore one that day.. the dust was intense):

One of the many random news papers we found covering the floors from the 40's and 50's.

We finally got all that wall paper off the walls!

Here's a picture of the trailer we filled to the brim with trash (this was only about half of the trash that came out of our house that day) :

Jed and I taking a rest after a hard days work :)

First Things First

Our house needed a roof right away! So Jed hustled like crazy with the help of Paul, Eduardo, Benny, Theo, & Leanna and we got it up over the course of next 2 weeks.

Check it out!

First the rafters were reinforced.

Next, the new fascia boards were attached to the rafters all around the house.

Jed and Paul worked hard to get the structural integrity of the entire attic re-established, before they could put the sheet metal up.

We got the sheet metal for free by using a recycled roof, which was amazing! However, setting up the lathe and trying to match it up with all the roof's previous screw holes was super challenging. But we did it! (in the blazing Texas summer heat!)

The bulk of the roof is now finally finished! Wheew...

We still have to paint it, put on the right ridge caps, drip ledges, and install soffits all around, but for now we can take a deep breath...
ahhh :)
